Suppose you were interested in occurrences of the French word 'mère'. A standard search for 'mere' will match this word, but will also match examples of the English word 'mere'.

On the Advanced Search page, entering 'm#egrave#re' and checking the box labelled 'Exact character searching' will result in only instances of 'mère' being matched. '#egrave#' is the name used by OED Online to refer to the character 'è'.
