What material is included on the CD-ROM?

The 20-volume Second Edition of the OED.

Are the OED Additions Series volumes included on the CD-ROM?

No, but we plan to include the Additions Series volumes in the next version of the CD-ROM. The Additions Series volumes are, however, included in the OED Online, which is available on this site to subscribers.

What are the minimum system requirements?

  • PC with minimum 200MHz Pentium-class processor
  • 32 MB RAM (64 MB recommended)
  • 750MB hard disk space (required for indexes)
  • 16-speed CD-ROM drive (32-speed recommended)
  • SVGA monitor: 800×600 pixels; 16-bit setting recommended (High colour; 64K)
  • Windows 95, 98, NT4

Is the CD-ROM compatible with Windows 2000?

The CD-ROM has not been specifically designed for Windows 2000. However, although it has not been extensively tested on this platform, it has been found to be broadly compatible. To download a software patch to fix any incompatibility problems you may be experiencing, please go to [off-site link] technical support.

Is the CD-ROM compatible with Windows ME?

Is there a Mac version of the CD-ROM?

Version 1.0 of the CD-ROM is no longer available in a Mac version. Versions 2.0 and 3.0 are not available for the Mac platform.

Is there a link to Microsoft Word or to other word processors?

No, links to specific word processors have not been developed.

Can the CD-ROM be used in place of the default spellchecker or dictionary in a word processor?

No, the CD-ROM cannot be configured to replace the default spellchecker or dictionary in a word processor.

Does the CD-ROM include audio pronunciation?

There is no audio pronunciation on the CD-ROM.

Is it possible to install the CD-ROM to run over a network?

No - the CD-ROM cannot be networked. It is available in a single-user version only. Network licences are, however, available for OED Online.

Can I install and run the CD-ROM from my hard disk?

No. You need the data CD in the CD-ROM drive whilst using the OED.

As I have to keep the CD-ROM in the drive, what happens if I damage the CD-ROM?

We will replace it for you on receipt of the damaged CD-ROM. This service will be limited to one replacement disk per registered customer.

I bought the previous version of the OED on CD-ROM. Can I upgrade?

Yes. In order to qualify for this special upgrade price, please send proof of ownership.

Will the CD-ROM be updated?

The next version of the CD-ROM, which will include the Additions Series volumes and advanced search features, is planned for release early in 2002.

If I buy the CD-ROM, will I get a discount on future updated versions?

Yes, it is normal policy for existing users to get a discount on updated and upgraded versions, providing that the registration card included in the CD box is returned to us.

How many CDs will I receive?

Two - an installation disc and a data disc.
