Searching for entries by first cited author

Aim: to search for all words whose earliest evidence was written by Jane Austen

  1. Open the Full Text search panel by clicking [Show Simple Search form].

  2. Type Austen into the input box.

  3. Click on the list box (showing full text by default) and choose first cited author as your text area. This confines your search to the authors of the earliest recorded usage of words.

  4. Click [Perform Full Text search] to start the search.

  5. The results list is displayed. The results include baseball, door-bell, and stylish.

This search also finds words whose earliest evidence was written by other authors with the name Austen, such as genet-moil, martensite, and ungrafted.
