Finding etymological references to a language

Aim: to search for references to the language Algonquian

  1. Open the Full Text search panel by clicking [Show Simple Search form].

  2. Type Algonquian into the input box.

  3. Select language names from the search area list box.

  4. Click [Perform Full Text search] to start the search.

  5. The results list is displayed. The results include Algonkin, Algonquin, and Algonquian.

The Collation of language names lists all the different forms in which language names appear in the OED's etymologies.

  6. One of the results occurs in the entry babiche. Click on the entry's name to display it. Because the match occurs in the etymology section of the entry, this part of the entry is automatically displayed.

Searching for a language name in etymologies will find references to that language, but this does not mean that it will be in all cases the actual language of origin of the words found.
